she could make you leave your life behind, she could steal your body with a smile, she could hold you like a mountain, hold you like a mountain, hold you like a mountain side
I WAS FOLLOWING THE PACK

truthfully, the only reason anyone ever got sent to the pale was to be punished for something. it was a light smack on the wrist - go freeze your ass off for a couple of weeks and you'll see the error of yours ways, adjust your attitude, and come back to the fight with your head on straight. aaro only had to pull a few strings to get her the reassignment and still keep it on the downlow. nere was always wearing non-regulation clothing, mouthing off, threatening to punch people, actually punching people, and things that, accumulated, would have gotten her sent to the pale anyway if she weren't normally such a loyal soldier. she didn't need this attitude adjustment they were unknowingly sending her for, having had one back home in falkreath at the forge. her brothers had set her to rights, and she was ready to take on the imperial scum that had needlessly taken her baby brother from her...
instead, she'd spent the last week and a half with her teeth chattering and wondering if she was ever going to feel her toes again. actually, she'd been cold since she'd left home for the stormcloaks. nere was a nord, through and through, but falkreath was mild and it was always warm in the forge where she'd spent a good deal of her childhood. so when the boys proposed making a well-deserved evening at the nearby inn, she wasn't about to let them leave without her. they couldn't make the trip often, and generally had to settle for drinking around the fires at camp for fear of leading the enemy to them, but every once and a while a few of them were given leave to peel off and warm up, and nightgate inn was a damn good place as any.
nere had felt herself defrosting almost as soon as she stepped through the door. the military discipline had melted away with the looming promise of ale, and they looked like any other bunch of ragtag, iceburned men - at least until nere shook out her long red hair. it earned her a couple of looks, some with a newfound appreciation, some with judgement, but nere was oblivious to them as she clapped a hand on the shoulder of a brother in arms and took the bet that she couldn't drink more than him. they never failed to try and assert their dominance in this more or less good natured way, and given the woman that she was, nere never failed to take up their challenge. she'd planned to consume copious amounts of alcohol anyway, why not make it a game?
the descent into drunkenness was quick, but nere won the gold from her comrade. empty bottles strewed the table and nere was standing upon it with them, teetering dangerously and loudly claiming her victory, to much hollering from her friends. "d'ja know who you're drinkin' with now?" she questioned with a laugh, her tongue loosened with drink. her decidedly more drunk comrade - slight guy, definitely an archer with a build possibly wispier than her own - groaned by way of response. "'nyone else wanna go?" she threatened, as intimidating as a drunk woman atop a table could manage, but when they responded in the negative it was then that she seemed to realize that there were other people in the tavern. she wheeled on the rest of the bar, slipping a bit and having to bend down to catch herself before returning slowly to the upright position. "what 'bout you?" she waved an arm vaguely at the rest of the bar.
